I wanted to share the amazing story of Koa who we adopted through ARF in 2012. Harper… who we renamed Koa, was an incredible dog from day one. He loved everyone and everything. Cats, dogs and people were his fav. Koa was calm and always “there”. He became my running buddy around age 1 and ran miles and miles with me until he retired at the age of 10. We learned to walk together after that.
When Koa was 5, we gave him human siblings. His twin sisters adored him. Koa was their protector and from the day they came home, he was there. He helped raise them.
Koa and I ran together still….just while I pushed a double stroller. Koa helped clean up during the messy years of toddlers learning to eat. He did not complain.
Koa was with me through my cancer diagnosis and was beside me when I got the news. He was the first one I spoke to after surgery to see if my voice sounded funny or not.
Koa was the best dog, the dog I didn’t want and didn’t need….at first. I cannot imagine my life without him…
On May 2, 2025, we made the heartbreaking decision to allow Koa to leave us. He spent his life making others happy. He was just 3 months short of celebrating his 14th birthday.
Koa loved life. Even when his back legs stopped worked properly, he still headed for the door when I grabbed his leash. He walked a full kilometer on his last day and then enjoyed an ice cream cone before walking himself into the vets office. Koa even loved trips to the vet.
Thank you ARF for doing what you do. Because of you, we experienced life with this amazing dog for almost 13 full years.
Koa has left a huge hole in our hearts. I know he is now pain free and can hear again, happily chasing squirrels and sleeping in snowbanks on the other side of the bridge. He was so kissed and cuddled down here on earth.
Rest easy my bud. You gave us so much in your lifetime, you deserve it.
Koa was such an important part of our family.
