Dog Day Out
Give a shelter dog a break — and be part of their journey to a forever home.

A Day Out That Makes a Difference
Dog Day Out invites members of the community to take eligible shelter dogs out for a day in the city. These adventures help dogs gain real-world experience, meet new people, and show off who they are outside the shelter — increasing their confidence, visibility, and chances of adoption.
Dogs selected for Dog Day Out are those who benefit most from time away from the busy shelter environment. Outings provide enrichment, positive exposure, and valuable insight for our team — all while helping create meaningful connections between dogs and potential adopters.
Is Dog Day Out Right for You?
Dog Day Out is best suited for participants who:
- Are 18 years or older
- Feel comfortable handling medium to large, energetic, or strong dogs
- Are confident using a leash and navigating public spaces with a dog
- Understand that these dogs may still be learning manners or leash skills
Many Dog Day Out dogs are young, active, or still building their training foundations — but they’re often incredible companions with a little guidance and patience.
What Should I Bring?
+
Nothing but yourself — we’ve got the rest covered. You’ll be provided with a backpack that includes:
- An info card with emergency contact details
- A report card to share your observations
- Water bottle and bowl
- Towel
- Toys and treats
- Poop bags
- “Adopt Me” bandana
- Doggy seatbelt
Everything you need for a safe, fun day out.
Where Can I Go with My Dog?
+
Dog Day Out adventures take place all over the city! You may explore:
- Leashed green spaces, parks, and riverwalks
- Dog-friendly shops (please call ahead to confirm)
- Dog-friendly cafés, restaurants, or pubs with outdoor seating and shade
- Off-leash parks are not permitted
- Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or on athletic fields
You’ll receive an info card with general guidelines, plus access to a map highlighting dog-friendly destinations.
Can I Bring My Own Dog?
+
We ask that your Dog Day Out companion be the only dog on your outing. Our shelter dogs often participate in playgroups, so the one-on-one attention they receive during Dog Day Out is incredibly valuable — and it gives them the chance to shine for potential adopters.
Can I Request a Specific Size or Breed?
+
Most Dog Day Out dogs are medium to large and may be strong. Because dogs are constantly coming and going from our care, we’re unable to accommodate requests that exclude specific breeds or sizes. Pairings are based on each dog’s needs and suitability for a day out in the community.
Can Kids Join?
+
Yes — kids are welcome to participate. Please note:
- Children must be listed during registration
- Adults must always remain the dog’s handler
- Children and dogs must be always supervised
Can I Take Out More Than One Dog?
+
Currently, we’re unable to accommodate multiple dogs on a single outing.
Who Do I Contact If I Need Help?
+
All emergency contact information is provided to you when you pick up your supplies.
What If I Fall in Love?
+
It happens — a lot. If your Dog Day Out companion steals your heart, you can learn more about adopting, fostering, or sponsoring them through our team members.
